Security at the U.S.-Mexican border is so underfunded and shoddy that it is practically nonexistent these days. However, for the U.S. Border Patrol agents who have to do the job, their day is filled with danger and the risk of death.
While testifying before the Senate Homeland Security Committee, U.S. Border Patrol Chief Mark Morgan stated his agents are being assaulted at a 200% higher rate from previously reported year.
“One thing was consistent and abundantly clear. The men and women of the U.S. Border Patrol have one of the toughest jobs in federal law enforcement,” Morgan said.
These brave men and women at the border have to do their jobs with limited resources as Washington has failed to provide them with the tools they need to protect our country at the border.
The president and other politicians on the left want to do everything they can to encourage illegal aliens to come here, take resources away from American veterans, and violate our laws.
The Border Patrol chief went on to say, “They are the most assaulted federal law enforcement in the United States. More than 7,400 border patrol agents have been assaulted since 2006,” Morgan told the committee. “That rose in FY16 by 20 percent, and year-to-date we are seeing an increase in assaults of 200 percent from the previous year-to-date. It’s a dangerous job.”
At the beginning of his presidential campaign, Donald Trump was criticized for calling the illegal immigrants coming over the border criminals. However, if that is false, then why are so many border patrol agents being assaulted every year?
It can be argued that anyone who comes into this country illegally is a criminal, albeit not all of them violent. To make matters worse, many of the people who assist non-U.S. citizens in crossing the border are armed.
“Since my short time here, two agents have already been killed. The agents are dedicated to the mission, this country, themselves, and doing something greater than themselves. I am honored to be serving with them. These are my first most important observations in my first four months here,” Morgan said.
Hopefully, this testimony before the Senate Homeland Security Committee will finally make some politicians on the left serious about securing our border. Maybe this testimony will keep them from putting their political party above our national security.
It is unacceptable for the country with the largest military in the world to be completely unable to protect its own agents on its border.
In addition to building a wall, the use of E-Verify, more border patrol agents, training, and drones should be included in Trump’s comprehensive immigration program so that these border agents no longer have to work under the fear they will be killed.
