President Donald Trump thrilled conservatives when announcing his Supreme Court justice nominee last night, especially after this heartwarming show of respect.
“With us tonight is Maureen Scalia, a woman loved by her husband and deeply respected by all. I am so happy she is with us,” President Trump said when instructing the press cameras to turn and focus upon Justice Antonin Scalia’s widow. Marueen was seated in the front row in a seat of honor next to Vice President Mike Pence.
Classy move, Mr. President – classy move! Supreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch also lauded the justice who’s seat he will fill and Mrs. Scalia in the audience.
“Thank you, Maureen. She’s really the ultimate representative of the late great Justice Antonin Scalia, whose image and genius was in my mind throughout the decision-making process,” President Donald Trump continued.
Maureen Scalia appeared quite touched by the lofty words used to describe her husband. The widow was greeted with a loud round of applause by the crowd gathered in the East Room of the White House for the highly anticipated press conference.
Antonin Scalia was a Supreme Court justice from 1986 until his death in February 2016. He was a highly respected justice, even by liberals on the court who frequently disagreed with his interpretation of the Constitution.
Justice Scalia was appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States by President Ronald Reagan. Scalia worked as an attorney in private practice through the 1960s.
In the 1970s, he had legal roles in President Richard Nixon’s general counsel and was the assistant attorney general. He served on the federal court of appeals before being nominated by President Reagan to serve on the Supreme Court.
Justice Scalia was the only child of Italian immigrants. He grew up in Queens where earned straight A’s in the public school system. He went on to graduate from both Georgetown University and Harvard.
Justice Scalia met his wife Maureen while working on his law degree. The couple had nine children together.
Judge Neil Gorsuch certainly has some might big shoes to fill, but President Trump would not have chosen him if he wasn’t up to the job.
