Donald Trump stated he hoped for good relations with Russia, but could be a much more serious opponent than Hillary if relations don’t work out
At Donald Trump’s press conference on Wednesday, his first since winning the US presidential election, Mr. Trump again had positive words to say about future relations with Russia, saying Vladimir Putin would respect him more than previous presidents.
He also said that in the event he didn’t get along with Putin, he could be much tougher on the Russian president than Hillary would have been able to.
“If Putin likes Donald Trump, guess what folks. That’s called an asset, not a liability,” Trump said. “Do you honestly believe that Hillary would be tougher on Putin than me?”
Asked about Russian hacking, Trump for the first time since his briefing by US intel agencies last Friday, grudgingly conceded Russian involvement, but sought to downplay his statement by also pointing out China’s history of hacking.
He then lambasted former Secretary of State Clinton’s “reset” with Russia in 2009, including her asking Russia’s foreign minister Lavrov to push a red plastic “reset button” with her which her office mistranslated into Russian as an “overcharge” button.
“We’re either going to get along, or we’re not,” said Trump. “I hope we get along.”
