A Republican congressman has suggested foreign involvement in American politics, but not from Russia this time.
In a recent interview with Vice News, Representative Paul Gosar (R-AZ) claimed that billionaire George Soros might have been behind the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which resulted in the death of 32-year-old Heather Hyer, according to
As most will remember, protestors occupied “Emancipation Park,” which was named “Lee Park” two month’s earlier, to protest Charlottesville vice-mayor Wes Bellamy’s call to remove the statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from the park. Thousands of counter-protestors arrived to confront a few hundred white supremacist protesters, sparking violent confrontations.
J’aime Morgaine, an Arizona resident and one of Rep. Gosar’s constituents, filed a federalagainst Gosar after he blocked her on Facebook. Morgaine argued that by blocking her on Facebook, Rep. Gosar was violating her first amendment rights to engage in debate with a public official on a public platform.
While defending himself against these allegations, Rep. Gosar expressed the need to block far-left commenters, because left-wing violence is on the rise. To support his claim, Rep. Gosar referred to the recent congressional baseball shooting, which left five wounded including Senate Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA), and the frequent attacks perpetrated by the far-left anarchists of Antifa.
Rep. Gosar explained that Scalise’s shooter was active on many far-left Facebook groups. Gosar is worried that hateful comments like the ones posted by Morgaine could encourage violence against him.
After Gosar’s mention of the violence of groups such as Antifa, the Vice reporter stated, “In fairness, antifa is in the news because of a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville,” ignoring months of reporting on Antifa prior to the August 12 Unite the Right rally to suggest that the specter of left-wing violence is greatly exaggerated.
In reality, even mainstream outlets like
Rep. Gosar responded to the reporter’s statement by suggesting that the official narrative around the Unite the Right rally may not be the whole picture. Instead, the congressman suggested this was a false-flag operation designed to demonize President Trump and average Republicans by conflating them with white supremacists.
George Soros might have been behind the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Do you become responsible for that which you fund?
“Because let’s look at the person that actually started the rally.” Gosar said. “It’s come to our attention that this is a person from Occupy Wall Street that was an Obama sympathizer. So, wait a minute, be careful where you start taking these people to.” Jason Kessler was the main organizer behind the Unite the Right rally.
“And look at the background. You know, you know George Soros is one of those people that actually helps back these individuals. Who is he? I think he’s from Hungary. I think he was Jewish. And I think he turned in his own people to the Nazis. Better be careful where we go with those.” He continued.
While Rep. Gosar insinuated Soros’s involvement in the protest, he was not making any concrete accusations. Instead, he suggested the truth is being hidden from us. “Wouldn’t it be interesting to find out?” He wondered.
